What you need to know about Acute Flaccis Myelitis

You may have heard some stories in the news lately about children developing polio-like symptoms. This is caused by a rare but serious disease called Acute Flaccid Myelitis. It is not a new condition but has gained in prevalence over the past few years and primarily affects children. While the exact cause is unknown, it is suspected that viruses and environmental toxins play a role in contracting the disease.

  • Michigan has 4 cases of suspected cases of acute flaccid myelitis

What do we know about AFM?

The nervous system, specifically the spinal cord, is the part of the body affected. This can cause muscles and reflexes in the body to abnormally function causing paralysis, difficulty moving the eyes, facial/eyelid drooping, as well as difficulty swallowing or slurred speech. There is no vaccine for AFM. Those diagnosed may receive occupational/physical therapy for their needs but no cure is available at this time.

What can you do to protect your family?

  • Keep everyone in your family up to date on vaccinations
  • Practice good hand hygiene
  • Use bug repellant if you know you will be outdoors with mosquitoes.
